RORY & CONOR VICTORIOUS IN ELITE MEN’S FOURSOMES

Rory and Conor McKenna were the deserved winners of the Guernsey Press elite men’s foursomes tonight after another brilliant display.

The boys started the week with a solid round in qualifying last Sunday dropping just one shot and never looked back. When they were tested during the week they had the skill and resilience to deal with everything that came their way.

They needed to be at their best in the final against Jamie Blondel and Steve Mahy but even when their opponents made birdies they kept calm and when they shook hands on the 16th after a 3&2 victory they were just one over par. It was an early birthday present for Rory who turns 18 tomorrow, and this formidable partnership is one we hope to see wearing green at La Moye in September.

Congratulations from everyone at the junior section and happy birthday tomorrow Rory!

NSV TROPHY & GORDON ROWLINSON CUP – WINS FOR ALEX MILLS, LEWIS O’BRIEN & EVAN LE HURAY

Twenty four juniors from three different clubs teed up in the first home competition of the year yesterday and the second event in the island wide Ray Lowe Sporting Foundation order of merit, the NSV Trophy and Gordon Rowlinson Cup – a fantastic turnout. Conditions were tricky with a cold wind but the golf was of the very highest quality and set the standard for what promises to be an exciting season.

In the NSV Trophy there were 12 players including Gus Carre, Charlie Czarnecki and Anton Swale who have moved up to the white tees this season, welcome additions to a very strong field. The winner was Alex Mills who has been in great form recently, he has been travelling regularly to the UK to train and compete with the Hampshire U14 Squad ahead of the season where he has impressed with his quality ball striking and all round play. His opening tee shot was a beautifully flighted long iron that drilled through the wind splitting the fairway setting him up for the rest of the round as he proceeded to reel off six pars in a row to make the turn in 38. He then came back in 39 matching his par tally on the front nine to card a 77 gross for 39 points – a wonderful round of golf. As a result Alex is now one round away from single figures which is inevitable, a prolific winner throughout his career, he will be a serious contender in both junior and men’s competition this season.

Runner up was Jayden Tucknott with a sublime 69 gross for 36 points. Based on his recent form this shouldn’t have been a surprise, but with a cold, biting wind followed by a heavy downpour later, this was a quite brilliant round of golf in testing conditions. Jayden was out in 36 with a birdie at the 7th and then produced a superb back nine of 33 which included birdies at the 14th and 16th. It’s well documented how hard he works on his golf and whilst most people would have put their feet up following such a tough round, after a short break he headed back out on the course for a friendly! In third place was Rory Mckenna who was just edged out on countback. His excellent 71 gross included birdies at the 8th and 14th and his game looks in great shape ahead of some major competitions in the next couple of weeks.

In the red tee Gordon Rowlinson Cup the winner was Lewis O’Brien with a brilliant 40 points. The Hampshire U12 star has been working very hard on his game recently, regularly dishing out wins against some of the older juniors in putting competitions. He recently acquired a new driver and hit a monster drive down the first leaving a short iron to the green where he made an excellent par. Further pars followed at the 7th and 9th and he made the turn in 42 returning in 45 including pars at the 10th, 13th and 17th for an outstanding 87 gross. In this kind of form he is going to be tough to beat this year. Runner up was Harry Ingrouille with 28 points, big hitter Harry is sure to feature in the red tee category this year.

In the blue tee competition there were eight players including three girls. The golf was exceptional with Evan Le Huray fresh off a win at La Grande Mare last week, scoring an incredible 27 points which included a birdie 3 nett 1 on the first and nett eagles at the 4th, and 9th! Evan made his competitive debut last season and he overpowered the course yesterday with some quality ball striking to secure victory by seven points from Luke Evans. Luke looks to be another very talented prospect, with a great swing generating impressive power. His 21 points included nett birdies on the 1st and 2nd and a brilliant par, nett eagle, on the 8th. In third place with 19 points was Mary-Anne Waterton who can be very proud of her round after a tough competition last week.

As for the moment of the day, that also came in the blue tee competition. After skipping up to the first tee all the way from the club house, Annabelle Tee approached her opening tee shot grinning from ear to ear like a Cheshire cat before promptly and effortlessly hitting a superb drive. Her sister Lucy then followed suit. We’re not sure if we’ve ever seen someone so happy to hit a golf ball in junior competition but it was a wonderful reminder of why we all love this beautiful game.

The Hurford Cup and Bowmaker Trophy due to be played on the 30th April have now been rescheduled to August 13th so the next junior competition will be on the 7th May at La Grande Mare – details to follow.

JAYDEN MAKES IT TWO WINS IN A ROW WITH VICTORY IN THE EFFINGHAM JUNIOR OPEN

Jayden Tucknott made it two wins in two days in the UK with another spectacular performance at the Effingham Golf Club Junior Open in Surrey yesterday. The top 100 UK course is situated just outside London and offered a great test of golf in freezing conditions with another high quality field.

Jayden warmed up quickly though after a brilliant birdie, birdie start. Another birdie followed at the 4th and then again at the 8th and 9th. Incredibly he was 5 under after 9 holes and threatening to tear the course apart. Jayden’s all round play was exceptional and his driving was definitely straighter than Grandfather Ken in his buggy on the course the day before!

Amazingly Jayden made yet another birdie on the 10th to go 6 under. He then hit a rocky patch making three doubles in a row followed by a bogey. However he showed great resilience and the spirit of a champion to bounce back with three pars in a row to finish with a superb 72 (+1) to take the victory.

The win means Jayden will wake up this morning as Guernsey’s newest plus handicap player - many congratulations to him on a fabulous week in England.

Also in the field with Jayden were Lewis Marley and Noah Davy. Although they were not at their best, Lewis had the consolation of winning a nearest the pin prize and both will have gained more valuable experience which they can use when they compete again in the UK later in the season.

BRILLIANT JAYDEN STORMS TO VICTORY IN THE LIPHOOK JUNIOR OPEN

Jayden Tucknott stormed to victory in the Junior Open at magnificent Liphook Golf Club today with a stunning four under par 67 gross to win by 7 shots. The junior open is one of the flagship events on the Hampshire Junior tour attracting a high quality field and the opportunity for some of the most talented players in the south to test themselves on one of the best courses in the country.

After a steady start Jayden made a double bogey on the 4th, the toughest hole on the course, before bouncing back with three birdies in a row reaching the turn in level par.

Then on the back nine the fireworks came.

After making steady pars on the first four holes he holed out for a brilliant eagle two on the short par four 15th and then finished in style making birdies on the 17th and 18th to come back in 32, four under par.

It was quite simply a brilliant round of golf and to do it on a course of the stature of Liphook underlines the quality and talent of the hardest working golfer on the Island. His performance will also send an early season reminder to Island Captain Dave Jeffrey that Jayden on this form is one of the top players in Guernsey.

It was also a very good day for Junior Captain Lewis Marley who came third with a very creditable 77 gross which included a brilliant two under par back nine. Tanner Austin was 6th and Noah Davy 17th.

The boys are back in action tomorrow on another Top 100 UK course for the Effingham Junior Open in Surrey.

A big thank you to our junior section travel sponsor White Star Capital for their great support.

ROYAL GUERNSEY JUNIORS 3.5 - 0.5 LA MOYE JUNIORS

The forecast didn’t deter a brave up & coming La Moye Junior Golf Team! The team travelled into the island first thing for the Inaugural Hawk Trophy, kindly sponsored by Hawk Group!

The chosen format was fourball better-ball and Team Manager Dan O’Brien had a mix of experienced players and fast improving younger players at his disposal.

His pairings chosen were; Conor McKenna & Lewis O’Brien, James Troop & Gus Carre, Alex Mills & Josh Neville and Jennie Bally & Tom Chamberlain.

Conor; leading the team out in the Junior Captain’s absence, & Lewis were down through six holes but put together a strong middle stint on the course which resulted in a 4/2 win.

James Troop & Gus Carre got off to a slower start than they would’ve wanted but won some key holes around the turn before a convincing finish for a 3/2 win.

Alex Mills & Josh Neville crucially won the half point needed to claim the Hawk Trophy! They were 1up through 17 holes but inclement weather on the last hole made it difficult to hold onto their lead.

Jennie Ballay & Tom Chamberlain found themselves down in the match for most of the day but emphatically won holes 14, 15, 16 & 17 for a 2/1 win! An amazing finish to an incredible show of golf.

The teams then enjoyed cheeseburgers & chicken nuggets in the clubhouse before visiting Vice Captain Ryan Hafey made a great speech and handed over the trophy to “Captain for the day” Conor McKenna.

Conor thanked Ann-Marie & Simon from La Moye for their help in organising and extended thanks to Rihoy & Son for their continued support of our team matches! The team also extends their thanks to Dan O’Brien for leading the team and to Past Lady Captain Val Austin for giving up her time in gale force winds to see the players off.

Junior Turkey Trot 2022

There was a bumper entry for the junior turkey trot with 20 players braving the cold weather to play 9 hole Texas scramble. The teams comprised of experienced white tee players alongside red and blue tee players. The format went down a storm and it was a great way of introducing some of our youngest players to the older juniors who they don’t always have the chance to play with and visa versa. As for the older players, they got to see some outstanding golf from the next generation. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to do a similar event early next season. Thank you to all the players for taking part, parents, volunteers and the catering team for providing a well deserved and delicious meal.
